1. Under what circumstances should a transgender person be limited to using facilities designated for their sex assigned at birth (e.g. a trans woman required to use a men’s restroom or locker room)?
Only under their own self-imposed circumstances. A person's body is inviolable, and their choice to use a room, for whatever reason, is theirs alone.
2. Do you support protecting medical providers’ right to prescribe gender affirming care to transgender patients under 18 years old?
Yes.
3. What limits, if any, should be placed on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives in county government?
That would depend if a program or initiative is performative, or if it addresses harm and helps mitigate that harm. Any program, idea, or term can be weaponized if left to the hands of person with malintent.
4. What restrictions should be placed on children’s content (books, videos, etc.) that refers to LGBTQ+ identities?
Children's content means it's content for children. It's right there in the name, so there's nothing to restrict.
5. What proof, if any, should a person transitioning from one gender to another need to in order to change government issued documents? Are there any circumstances when this should be forbidden?
We already make it a pain for a person to chance their name, updating a more arbitrary attribute like "sex" (since that's what a driver's license uses for example) should be the same as updating weight, height, or hair color. You just be able to say what the value of the field should be, and that's it.
6. Do you approve of non-binary gender markers such as “X” instead of “M” or “F” on government documents? Why or why not?
Yes. I've known people who felt "O" and " - " best represented them, and including those in addition to "X" makes sense as well.
7. Should a transgender child who wants to participate in athletics but is uncomfortable in a program for their sex assigned at birth be allowed to participate in a program for the gender they transitioned to? (e.g. a transgender girl who is uncomfortable playing on a boys’ team but who wants to take part in sports).
Sure. I take an issue with kids sports not being about just play and having fun. Taking kids sports too seriously seems to get in the way of a lot of joy for a whole lot of young people.
8. When transgender people are incarcerated or detained, how should officials decide what gender they should be held with?
This one is complicated, but only because we start the conversation framed on incarceration and detention, when we have a crisis of decades of an over-incarcerated population, and the existence of for-profit prisons. For a scenario when a person may not require segregation to protect their safety, I would expect a person to held with the gender they identify with.
9. What restrictions, if any, would be appropriate on entertainment, such as drag shows, with content that involves crossdressing or other gender-nonconforming behavior?
Clothing is just clothing. Costume is just costume. What's the difference? I don't see why everybody shouldn't just wear whatever they want for whatever reasons that they choose.
10. When should therapies, such as conversion therapy, that seek to alter patients’ LGBTQ+ identity or change the behavior associated with such an identity, be allowed? When should they be restricted? Does it matter if the patient is a minor?
To start, we agree that they don't work, are cruel, and have been the source of generations of damage and trauma in the LGBTQ+ community. But consent is what's important. And if a person chooses to participate in, or be subjected to, those types of "therapies", how it is different from a person attending a religious service, or joining a book club? How do we spare someone from making a choice we don't support? We have to try our best to give them something else to choose that they find more appealing.
